In the Beginning

This was a short-term assignment to get us used to designing short simple games and developed them as much as we could.

Process Summary

I started by picking themes I'm interested in and try my best to come up with potential game ideas and then pick a concept that sounds fun and within a feasible scope. Then I would design the layout of the puzzles for each level, making sure to introduce the mechanics of the game at each stage and then combining them all at the last stage and letting players figure it out themselves.

Concept Brainstorm

  • I started out by coming up with some themes I'm interested and start concepting what kind of game could be made out of it.

Design Layout

  • I would design the layout of the puzzles for each level, making sure to introduce the mechanics of the game at each stage and then combining them all at the last stage and letting players figure it out themselves.
  • Due to short frame of time, I was only able to manage one dungeon level.

Build Iterations

  • Playtesting was done once a week during development and feedbacks were compiled from players.

Final Build Gameplay + Thoughts

  • From the feedback that has been gathered, people generally do enjoy the game and find the movement initially restrictive, but they got the hang of it pretty well after the first two levels.
  • On hindsight, brainstorming puzzle level design is quite challenging for me even though I generally enjoy puzzle games.
  • Figuring out new innovative ways to frame the puzzle while using the same mechanics is something I still struggle to achieve. More experiments and brainstorming is required to push my design limits.
